SFEPD Student Ambassador
Southern University & A&M College

Growing up, what kind of relationship did you have with money?
Growing up I had a pretty good relationship with money. I was taught just because you have it doesn’t mean you have to spend it.
What was it like to serve as an SFEPD Student Ambassador teaching your peers about personal finance, and what did you learn about yourself from this experience?
Teaching other students, specifically black students, means a lot to me because financial literacy is not taught in our community often and that is what holds us back. Meeting new people and discovering that they don’t know about credit and credit cards even if they are a little older is shocking because the lack of knowledge is the reason we fall behind.
What are the major benefits of students learning personal finance skills through seminars and classes during their college years?
The major benefits of students learning personal finance skills while in college is they are less likely to make credit mistakes and can start investing early.
When should students start learning basic concepts about personal finance (in elementary, middle school, high school, or college) and why?
I believe that young people should learn about the basic concepts of personal finances as soon as that are able to have a job or maintain income.
If you could share one financial tip with college students, what would it be?
If I could share one financial tip with college students is that credit cards are not bad but how you use them can have a cause and effect. Use a credit card for small purchases such as gas of a little food not for shopping and etc.
As a result of your Student Ambassador experience, what key lessons did you learn to help you manage your money better and is planning for your financial future an important goal after college?
To help manage my money better, I am going to continue to pay my bills on time or early and invest in stocks.
How did serving as a Student Ambassador help you prepare for your future and your career goals?
My career goals are to begin a career in real estate and own several successful rental properties. Eventually, I plan to transition into the insurance industry. Being part of SFEPD has helped me gain a broader understanding of insurance and its importance..
