SFEPD Student Ambassador

Growing up, what kind of relationship did you have with money?

I always wanted to learn how to grow and manage money, as I never really had a lot growing up.

What was it like to serve as an SFEPD Student Ambassador teaching your peers about personal finance, and what did you learn about yourself from this experience?

It is an honor to serve as an SFEPD student Ambassador because I get to teach my peers things that I didn’t learn until a later stage in life. I want everyone to know about financial literacy because it is such a hard part of adulthood, especially credit management which has so many misconceptions. I enjoyed getting to meet new people and getting out of my shell more which involved speaking in front of classes.

What are the major benefits of students learning personal finance skills through seminars and classes during their college years?

The major benefit is that they get to learn about financial literacy, whether it be as simple as budgeting or as complex as homeownership through their already scheduled class so it’s at no inconvenience to them.

When should students start learning basic concepts about personal finance (in elementary, middle school, high school, or college) and why?

I believe young people should start learning basic concepts about personal finance as early as high school.

If you could share one financial tip with college students, what would it be?

Start saving as soon as possible, Once you are more experienced, convert these savings into safe investing portfolios for higher returns that will beat the inflation rate.

As a result of your Student Ambassador experience, what key lessons did you learn to help you manage your money better and is planning for your financial future an important goal after college?

Learning credit management has been such a big help, so being able to do this through SFEPD has been an enormous lesson. I have learned to manage my money better. I definitely see planning for my financial future as an important goal.

How did serving as a Student Ambassador help you prepare for your future and your career goals?

My career goal is to either be an investment banker or financial analyst. Being a Student Ambassador allowed me to learn more about these career paths while also developing skills. Let’s say I do want to be an financial analyst/coach, I have already started giving students and peers tips and education on how to manage money through stocks.
