SFEPD Student Ambassador
Tuskegee University
Hometown: Long Beach, CA
Growing up, what kind of relationship did you have with money?
I didn’t have one. My parents struggled so I knew that it was hard to get but easier to spend.
What was it like to serve as an SFEPD Student Ambassador teaching your peers about personal finance, and what did you learn about yourself from this experience?
I really enjoyed the experience and took it very seriously. I found that the more passionate you are about a topic, the more you can truly engage and effectively communicate. I didn’t want them to just hear me, I wanted them to listen and take action. When we did have questions, I found that it validated the programs necessity to HBCUs. I enjoyed the opportunity to discuss conversations that we( black community) don’t have. I was able to present to my family and that was awesome to hear their feedback.
What are the major benefits of students learning personal finance skills through seminars and classes during their college years?
I think it helps them to avoid the pitfalls of major mistakes and financial illiteracy.
When should students start learning basic concepts about personal finance (in elementary, middle school, high school, or college) and why?
I think middle school. A lot of kids get money for birthdays or allowances but never realize the true value in money.
If you could share one financial tip with college students, what would it be?
Save but be a giver. It’s better to give than receive. God gave more than we could ever give and expected nothing in return.
As a result of your Student Ambassador experience, what key lessons did you learn to help you manage your money better and is planning for your financial future an important goal after college?
Saving and budgeting have had the biggest impact. Also I purchased a home this year so I was able to navigate through the process with more knowledge and understanding. Planning is essential to financial success and life.
How did serving as a Student Ambassador help you prepare for your future and your career goals?
My original goal was to work in finance, but I received an offer from MHP Porsche. The SFEPD Student Ambassador program has helped me become more aware of my finances and how knowledge is definitely power.
